This is a simplified explanation but illustrates the two impacts wage increases have.

The best reduction of inflation to a single line is "too much money chasing too few goods". Inflation is usually associated by extremely high aggregate demand when an economy is growing rapidly, but in some cases (like now) it can also happen if the aggregate supply of goods and services has shrunk.

A combination of the impact of covid on supply chains, oil/gas shortages, and a large decrease in the population of working Europeans in the UK has reduced supply significantly. As a result we've ended up with some spectacular inflation numbers, which will probably keep climbing as commodities and food are likely to see worsening shortages over the year.

So, increasing wages has an impact on both demand and supply. The demand side is easier to understand, if you pay people more you'll increase demand, which makes the imbalance between supply and demand worse, leading to additional inflation.

On the supply side increasing wages without increasing productivity will reduce aggregate supply, as the cost of providing goods/services increases. If you want to think of this on a company basis then you'd say that companies will have to increase their prices to break even. Obviously in the long run companies can't run at a loss, and bankruptcies can reduce supply further temporarily.

The really big problem here, and the issue the BoE is concerned about, is that this can turn into a vicious cycle, where inflation leads workers to demand pay rises, which further fuels inflation, and so on. Extremely high inflation is regarded as a very bad thing for understandable reasons, which leads to the sort of comments made by BoE staff here.

I'd like to point out that these comments aren't a value judgement on the merits of any one individual receiving a pay rise. Rather, it's recognizing the fact that in aggregate these pay increases can worsen inflation.”

"SAN ANTONIO – E&D Services, Inc., a Mississippi-based drilling company accused of engaging in racial harassment and retaliation against white and black employees at a South Texas work site, has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle a Title VII lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.

According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, four employees, three white and one black, experienced racial harassment while assigned to a drilling rig near Mirando City, Texas. The complainants accused the company of not taking steps to address incidents of harassment, including being subjected to racial taunts and mistreatment from Hispanic employees and supervisors working at the remote work site.

The complainants also asserted that their safety was threatened because E&D supervisors conducted safety meetings in Spanish only, and refused to interpret for them in English. White and black employees were told that they needed to learn Spanish because they were in South Texas. The employees said that instead of addressing their complaints of discrimination, E&D fired them.

Racial harassment and retaliation for complaining about it violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The EEOC filed suit (Civil Action No. SA-08-CA-0714-NSN) in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, San Antonio Division, after first attempting to reach a voluntary settlement.

“Racial harassment – by anyone, against anyone, or in any language at the workplace – is wrong and illegal,” said David Rivela, senior trial attorney for the EEOC’s San Antonio Field Office. “No one should have to endure such abuse at work in order to earn a paycheck. And employers make a bad situation worse when they fire employees who complain about discrimination rather than addressing the problem.”

In addition to agreeing to pay the aggrieved former employees $50,000, E&D Services also agreed to establish an effective anti-discrimination policy and to provide anti-discrimination training to its employees."

You didn’t push for monetary reparations, or get reparations under a Black President; nor your 40 acres and a mule as a gift if someone else had to pay for it. You think it sensible after 200 years some folks are going to pay you trillions of dollars with a national debt crisis, maybe. Many present day Latino Blacks, African Blacks, European Blacks, other Blacks and Browns not even from slavery live in America on the fore front of demanding reparations. There will be a Rush of Brown, White, Red, mixed race people claiming they got black Heritage Slavery in their blood. It seems, this is really a political divisive issue, to separate people, to try to get out the Black vote under pretense of big pay day coming or white folks race baiting something you probable aren’t goanna get? More than anything, your reparations were Freedom and Opportunity; have you maximized your reparations already given? Are you are not already successful in America? Extremist actions taking away what your ancestors civil rights built for you. Now you seen as extremist by some. Civil rights leaders marched in dress cloths, neck ties, beautiful dresses and demanded workers right, equal pay to work, and education opportunities as reparations to pave their own future. People swayed because they wanted opportunity to work hard and get an education to succeed in life. These were seen as righteous request. They were joined by many whites who saw these as righteous humanity request. Time to hit the books a little harder; work a lot harder. I wouldn’t be sitting around for the next 200 years waiting for that payday. Get to work.

Folks, as much as I know about Black History, I never saw a black history class, till after I graduated High School in College.
